About This Blog

I started this blog because the tabs on the Lucero message board kept getting lost when they switched sites. A blog isn't a perfect forum for guitar tabs and chords, but it now has posts for all but a handful of their songs. And, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only source for Lucero tabs that has been endorsed by an actual Lucero guitarist. Accept no substitutes.

General Thoughts on Lucero Chords

Ben seems to favor chord variations that fret the B string at the third fret. If a C, Em, G, or A doesn't seem quite right, try:
Cadd9 (x32030), Em7 (022030), G (320033), Asus (x02230)

Also, I think he leaves the E string open on a lot of his D chords (xx0230).

Gone Fishing

I obviously haven't had time to update or improve this site in quite a while.  I keep telling myself that'll change, but it probably never will.  So thanks for visiting, but don't count on new posts or responses to comments.  It was a fun hobby while I had the time, and I still feel pretty good about most of the tabs.  But tabbing takes time, and I don't have enough of that.

It'd be cool if someone out there (hopefully someone who's better at this than I am) will pick up where I left off.  So feel free to copy anything you like from this site.  Or, if somebody wants to take this site over, shoot me a message at lucerotabs at gmail.

Go Easy

There's a good video of Ben playing his part of this on Nine Bullets. The basic idea for the verses is that he goes from C to C with ab A# in the bass, then to C with an F in the bass, and then beck to C.  Pretty simple.

On My Way Downtown

Happy Thanksgiving Lucero fans. I'm celebrating by tabbing one of the new songs they've been playing live. I love the way this song is shaping up. There are live videos here and here. I think the first one is a little more useful for figuring out how to play it.
Most of the song follows a basic AAED pattern, but the details take some explaining. First of all it starts with a riff over the first two verses that never appears again. Here's how that goes. You'll want to wrap your thumb to get the D bass note. (The x indicates a muted pick that happens right on the beat.)

It May Be Too Late

As is often the case with Ben, the key implies that the B chords are minor, but he plays them as B5 (power chords). Point is, if you're going to play the full chord, it sounds better minor.

Like Lightning


I finally got around to tabbing Brian's lead on this one. He plays it twice, and they're not exactly the same, but they're close enough that I only bothered to tab the first version. One thing to keep in mind: when he bends the B string on 10, he leaves it bent while he's playing the notes on the high E string, and then he unbends it when he comes back to the B string.

Women and Work

Hell yeah. It's that time again, folks. New Lucero songs are starting to trickle out into the world. There has to be at least seven of them in the chute. And despite being encumbered by inconveniences like a new job and a full load of grad work, I am determined to keep up with the tabs.

The latest one is called Women and Work. Here's a nice video of it. It's a bouncy working man's blues that reminds me of both The Devil & Maggie and Sounds of the City. The main part of the song is an A shuffle like this:

Can't Stand to Leave You

Alright, for anyone who hasn't heard it yet, Ben's been playing a new song, and you can check out a video of it here.

It's pretty simple. The verses and the chorus actually use the same AAGF riff. I labeled the first half of the A riff A(1) and the second half A(2).

Then there's a simple bridge riff and an instrumental break that both follow an AGFF patern. (I assume Brian will do a solo over the instrumental break.)

One quick note about the tab for the break: It repeats the AGFF cycle 4 times, two one way, and then two slightly different. The difference is actually only one note, specifically whether the G parts finish on open G or open D. Otherwise it's the same riff four times.

New Song

For the past year, I just haven't had any time to devote to posting here. So none of the old tabs have gotten the improvements I'd like to make, but at least there hadven't been any new songs to worry about tabbing. That is, there haven't been any new songs until now.

Not bad, right? I'll try to work out how to play it in the next week or so.

Recently Updated Tabs (2)

Welcome to my Lucero tabs blog. The number of new visitors continues to grow, and I'm happy that people seem to be getting some use from the site.

After tabbing Gone to the Sea, we now have at least some tab for all but the most obscure Lucero songs. Many of the tabs are still kind of mediocre. I'll keep working to improve the ones that need work, and someday they'll all be perfect. Maybe. As always, I appreciate input, feedback, and corrections.

Anyhow, with no songs left to tab, I've decided to use the front page to display all the tabs that have been updated/improved recently. That way, when you visit, you can easily check whether there's anything worth looking at for a second time.

The improvements will include going back to check for flat out mistakes, adding solos and lyrics to tabs that are missing them, and adding markers in between bars to help give you a sense of beat and timing. Feel free to use the comments to suggest tabs you'd like to see cleaned up and/or solos you'd like to see added.

Recently Updated Tabs

Happy 1372 Overton Park Day


Today's the official release date for the new record, so I figured it was time for an update. If you haven't bought it yet, you should. In fact, you should buy it directly from the band.

I met my goal of getting a tab up for every song by the release date, you can find them all on the record's tab index page. I've got leads and solos for almost everything, but it's gonna take some time before I work through Brian's whole lead on Sixes and Sevens. That might even get split into its own post.

After that, it'll probably be quiet here for a while. I'm always revisiting old tabs to look for mistakes and/or add solos. As I get better, the old tabs seem to get worse. So there's always something to improve. Somehow I never posted Brian's leads from Bikeriders. I'll fix that soon. I'm also working on the terrific solo from The Last Song (probably Ben's best solo). That'll get posted pretty soon, too.

I'd love to do another interview, but now that they're doing "real" publicity to support the release, it's gonna be hard to get on their schedule. That may have to wait.
