About This Blog

I started this blog because the tabs on the Lucero message board kept getting lost when they switched sites. A blog isn't a perfect forum for guitar tabs and chords, but it now has posts for all but a handful of their songs. And, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only source for Lucero tabs that has been endorsed by an actual Lucero guitarist. Accept no substitutes.

Holy shit! That's how that goes... www.lucerotabs.blogspot.com

Thank you to the folks who have sent me submissions, suggestions, and corrections. Thanks also to anyone who posted a tab on the luceromusic.com boards. You can find me there posting as Boston Twang. You can also email me at lucerotabs@gmail. Submissions and/or corrections are greatly appreciated.

General Thoughts on Lucero Chords

Ben seems to favor chord variations that fret the B string at the third fret. If a C, Em, G, or A doesn't seem quite right, try:
Cadd9 (x32030), Em7 (022030), G (320033), Asus (x02230)

Also, I think he leaves the E string open on a lot of his D chords (xx0230).

Can't Stand to Leave You

Alright, for anyone who hasn't heard it yet, Ben's been playing a new song, and you can check out a video of it here.

It's pretty simple. The verses and the chorus actually use the same AAGF riff. I labeled the first half of the A riff A(1) and the second half A(2).

Then there's a simple bridge riff and an instrumental break that both follow an AGFF patern. (I assume Brian will do a solo over the instrumental break.)

One quick note about the tab for the break: It repeats the AGFF cycle 4 times, two one way, and then two slightly different. The difference is actually only one note, specifically whether the G parts finish on open G or open D. Otherwise it's the same riff four times.

Capo on the 3rd fret

A(1)________________A(2)
I see your face when I close my eyes
G_________________________F
I hear your name when the wind's just right
A(1)______________A(2)
The setting sun's gone once more
G___________________________F
Each night's worse than the night before
A(1)
Now I can't stand to leave you
________A(2)________________________________G_______F
I can't take the weight of this world on my own
A(1)
I don't know what I'll do
________A(2)____________________G__________F
I don't think I can make it all alone

A(1)______________A(2)
They say all will mend with time
G_______________________F
That don't mean much to me tonight
A(1)_______________A(2)
Like city streets, your eyes shine
G__________________________F
And I'm out here, with the losing kind
A(1)
Now I can't stand to leave you
________A(2)________________________________G_______F
I can't take the weight of this world on my own
A(1)
I don't know what I'll do
________A(2)____________________G__________F
I don't think I can make it all alone

Bridge:

A_______________________G___________F
And yes, I've felt this kind of pain
A_______________G_______________F
A hole straight through my chest
A___________G_______________F
It's always there, never far away
A______________G____________F
Seems now it's all that's left

Instrumental break/solo

A(1)______________A(2)
Every song I hear your voice sing
G_________________________F
The words are clear. Come back to me
A(1)_______________A(2)
Come back to me my only one
G_______________________F
And hold me close. Your work is done.
A(1)
Now I can't stand to leave you
________A(2)________________________________G_______F
I can't take the weight of this world on my own
A(1)
I don't know what I'll do
________A(2)____________________G__________F
I don't think I can make it all alone

i just wanted to say thank you for tabbing these songs. especially this one. thank you so very very much for this. their music stirs something powerful within me. this song even more than most. and while i only occasionally play my guitar, its songs like this that mean so much to me to play. your work here has made it possible for me to play this and feel that much closer to the music. thank you so very much.

Thank you for the kind words. It's always nice to hear folks who find the site useful. I just wish I had more time to devote to it.

Hey Noah--

I can't thank you enough for the work you do here. Lucero's music means a lot to me, as I'm sure it does to you, and being able to play the songs through the work you're doing is a really wonderful pleausure. Thank you for that.

I wonder if you've seen this video, and if you've thought about tabbing this version of "When You Decided to Leave"?

I know you tab alternate versions from time to time, and I thought this was different enough from the recording that you'd be interested. It sounds like typical recent-Ben "open chords + melodic embellishments," but maybe still worth sinking your teeth into. Hope you enjoy it, and thanks again for all you do.

Thanks. I have seen the Hendrix College videos. They're excellent. The one they did for the Devil and Maggie really helped me to understand the rhythms in that song, particularly the muting he does with his ring finger. As for When You Decided to Leave, the chords are all the same as what I've got tabbed, and it doesn't have a lead riff, so I'm not sure what else I'd tab for it. I guess maybe the hammering. If you're having trouble with that, let me know and I'll try to clear it up for you.

Great job! and thanks a bunch, this is a great song. In the bridge I play the F measures with an F and a G (like the two measures before) not a B like you have. I thought it sounded like what he was playing.

Cheers, KC
