On the off chance that anyone doesn't know, this is originally a Jawbreaker song, but the tab is based on Lucero's version.

In the comments someone asked about the picking pattern for the verses. It's pretty standard Ben stuff where he goes between the bass/root note of the chord and the B and G strings. As is often the case, the B string stays fretted at the third fret because he's playing G as 320033, adding a 7th to his Em (022030), and a 9th to his C (x32030). Look for some hammers, too, particularly when he switches to D. This should give you and idea:
---3------------0-------------0-
---3---3--------3---3---------3-
---0-----0------0-----0---0h2-2-
---0------------2---------0---0-
---2------------2---------------
-3-3-3-----3--0-0-0-----0-------
G____________________Em7
It gets loneliest at night
Em7________________D
down at the liquor store
D___________Cadd9
beneath the neon sky, our moonlight
G____________________________________Em7
Six A.M., the floor comes alive with lice
Em7___________________D
the pan's dried up so tight
D_____________Cadd9
with hardened beans, we're hungry
G F#_____Em7_____________D
__Well I lean on you sometimes
D_______Cadd9
just to see you're still there
G__________F#_______________________Em7
these feet can't take the weight of one
Em7_______D___________Cadd9
much less two, we hit concrete.
Em7_____G________________Cadd9
When we pulled into this mess
Em7______G_____________Am_______Cadd9
I know I painted you a prettier picture baby
Em7_________G____________Cadd9
but we were run out on a rail
Em7___________G____________Am____Cadd9
fell from the wagon to the night train
G C
I kissed the bottle
G C
I should've been kissing you
G C
you wake up to an empty night
G C
with tears for two
Cigarettes they fill the gaps
in our empty days
in our broken teeth
Say mister, can you spare a dime
some change could make a change
could buy some time, some freedom
Or an ear to hear my story
it's all I've got, my fiction
beats the hell out of my truth
a palm upturned burnt blue, don't call it sunburn
Em7 G C
You've been shaking on the job
G Am Em7 C
just one drink ahead of your past
Em7 G C
there's a white light coming up
Em7 G Am C
you draw the blinds hoping it'll pass
I kissed the bottle
I should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two
About This Blog
I started this blog because the tabs on the Lucero message board kept getting lost when they switched sites. A blog isn't a perfect forum for guitar tabs and chords, but it now has posts for all but a handful of their songs. And, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only source for Lucero tabs that has been endorsed by an actual Lucero guitarist. Accept no substitutes.
Thank you to the folks who have sent me submissions, suggestions, and corrections. Thanks also to anyone who posted a tab on the luceromusic.com boards. You can find me there posting as Boston Twang. You can also email me at lucerotabs@gmail. Submissions and/or corrections are greatly appreciated.
Holy shit! That's how that goes... www.lucerotabs.blogspot.com

General Thoughts on Lucero Chords
Ben seems to favor chord variations that fret the B string at the third fret. If a C, Em, G, or A doesn't seem quite right, try:
Cadd9 (x32030), Em7 (022030), G (320033), Asus (x02230)
Also, I think he leaves the E string open on a lot of his D chords (xx0230).
Cadd9 (x32030), Em7 (022030), G (320033), Asus (x02230)
Also, I think he leaves the E string open on a lot of his D chords (xx0230).

I was wondering what the strumming pattern is for this song, been working and working can't seem to nail it. In particular the picking on the chords before the song speeds up. Thank you! Wonderful site.
I added some stuff to the post. Let me know if it still doesn't answer your question.
i find that, in my opinion, it sounds better, if you are playing along with the album, if you drop everything down a half-step
keep up the good work, love the site, use it all the time
